If you love salmon, well, we really can’t blame you.
It’s tasty, it’s nutritious, it’s versatile and overall it’s just a quality fish. However, variety is the spice of life and if you’ve done salmon to death, here are four alternatives to salmon that are just as nutritious and delicious in their own right.
1. Tilapia
Tilapia is a wonderful alternative to salmon. With its beautiful mild flavour, it’s incredibly versatile but it’s also a great source of lean protein. It is also high in nutritional value although lower in omega 3 fatty acids than salmon. The great thing about tilapia is it’s not an expensive fish so it’s super easy to incorporate into everyday cooking. Try serving with a crisp, dry Pinot Grigio Italian white wine.
We have tilapia fillets, black tilapia and tilapia izumidai available to buy online.
2. Yellowtail
Yellowtail pairs well with zesty fresh ingredients such as lemon, mango, avocado, coriander, scallion, and parsley. Yellowtail is again quite mild in flavour so it lets the other ingredients in the dish shine. If you love sushi, yellowtail is particularly good as an alternative to salmon in sushi dishes.
We have yellowtail available to buy.
3. Arctic Char
Arctic Char is an excellent substitute for salmon because it has a similar colour, flavour, and texture. It tends to be a little bit lighter than salmon in terms of texture and flavour but like salmon, it is a fatty fish making it easy to cook as it won’t go dry or tough quickly. Wild-caught off the coast of Iceland, Arctic Char has a beautiful silvery to blue skin with pink speckles on each side making it a very attractive fish. One of the best ways to prepare Arctic Char is to pan-sear with the skin on. This way the moisture is locked in and its delicious flavour is complemented by the crispiness of the skin.
4. Rainbow Trout
Rainbow trout is a freshwater fish that has a buttery, rich flavour with moist flesh of a firm consistency. Trout does have a similar orange colour to salmon, although its omega 3 content is a bit lower however it is also a good source of iron, phosphorus, selenium and protein. Trout pairs well with garlic lemon butter herb sauce and even tzatziki!
