The best fish to try on the BBQ this summer

summer BBQ - the best fish to try

Got plans to host an epic summer BBQ this season? Don’t be afraid to throw some fish on the barbie! Hotdogs and burgers are always staples of a barbecue and don’t get us wrong, we love them. But many people shy away from including fish on their barbecue menu. And we’re here to change that!

Cooking over a flame is one of the most exciting ways to cook fish, and it gives your fish that crispy charred coat, smoky flavour and grill stripes you find in Mediterranean fish restaurants.

Here are the best types of fish to try on your BBQ this summer…

Swordfish

Swordfish is a great non-meat alternative to steak for a barbecue. It has a mildly sweet flavour and a meaty texture that holds up well to high-heat cooking which makes it a great type of fish to throw on the grill. The best thing about barbecuing swordfish? You don’t even need to do much with it! Simplicity is the secret to barbecuing swordfish. Stick to a little seasoning, a brush of olive oil and a generous squirt of lemon if you’re feeling fancy. And voila!

Monkfish

Monkfish might not be the most fancy-looking fish but its firm, buttery sweet meat will make it a hit at your BBQ. Its robust flesh works well on the barbecue but it’s not a particularly oily fish so it makes sense to add some oil and take care not to overcook it.

Sardines

These small silver fish really pack a punch proving size isn’t everything! Sardines turn a beautiful gold colour on the barbecue to really wow your guests. They are hardy, rich in oils and easy to cook – just rub with olive oil, salt and pepper before laying them on a searing grill.

Tossing them in paprika, chilli, lemon juice, garlic, rosemary and olive oil will really bring them to life and you can serve them with crusty bread to soak up the intense flavours and juices.

Halibut

Halibut makes for a fantastic BBQ fish due to its meaty texture, large flakes and delicate, sweet flavour. Halibut steaks are easier to manage on the barbecue than fillets and you’ll want to brush both the grill and steaks with oil to stop the fish from drying out.

Lobster

And if you really want to take your BBQ to the next level, why not try lobster? It sounds like a complicated venture but they’re easy to do. Nothing is as elegant and delicious as lobster, so brush with butter and a squeeze of lime juice and be careful not to overcook. Serve with a chilled glass of a good quality Chardonnay or Viognier to really impress your guests.
