Our favourite wine and fish pairings

wine and fish pairings

When we think about pairing wine with fish at a dinner party, we automatically think “dry white wine and a flaky white fish” but as we’re always looking to broaden our horizons, we thought we’d look at some more interesting combinations that pair just as well – if not better.

If you’re looking to experience something a bit more complex, then read on for our favourite mouthwatering wine and fish pairings. You and your dinner guests will thank us later.

Fried or battered fish & prosecco

The contrast between the sweetness of prosecco and the salty coating of fried or battered fish really does a number on your palate and it’s a lovely combination. Think things like salt and pepper squid rings, tempura prawns or battered cod. The savoury beer-battered coating you’d find on your standard fish and chips dish is elevated by the acidity and effervescence of prosecco.

Spicy fish & Moscato

Moscato wine is famous for its sweet flavours of peaches and orange blossom and this sweetness pairs really well with fish that’s hot and spicy. Whether you’re making a fish curry or something like spicy tacos, mild white fish like tilapia, sole or snapper are excellent bases.

Pinot noir & freshwater fish

Yes, shock, horror – fish can be paired with red wine. A pinot noir is perfect in this instance as it’s on the lighter side and if you’re going with red we’d recommend opting for wild fish such as salmon and trout. This is because they have more dense and meatier flesh than other types of fish. Most pasta dishes that incorporate fish into them would work well with a pinot noir.

Dry wine & oily fish

Yes, we love a conflicting palate – but it’s because they complement each other so well. Dry acidic wines work well to counter the strong oily flavours present in fish such as salmon, sardines, mackerel, herring and tuna. It’s always a good idea to match your wine to the meal as a whole too. For example, you might choose a lighter wine if paired with a summery mackerel salad, whereas a more robust wine would work well with seared tuna steak.
