It’s no secret that the British love their fish and seeing as it’s British Food Fortnight, we thought we’d share our favourite British fish dishes.

What is British Food Fortnight?

British Food Fortnight 2022 takes place from 17th September to 2nd October 2022.

It’s the 21st year of the celebration of the diverse and delicious food that Britain produces. The Fortnight is the biggest national celebration of British food on the nation’s calendar and there are hundreds of activities taking place in communities across the country during the two weeks. You can follow @LoveBritishFood for all the latest updates and see what their ambassadors are doing during the Fortnight.

Our favourite British Fish Dishes

If you’re looking to celebrate British Food Fortnight with some delectable fish dishes, here are our favourites…

Fish & chips

You can’t get more British than the traditional fish and chips and it’s no wonder it’s such a classic dish here. In fact, the origins of this dish go back to the 17th century! Is there anything better than succulent flaky white fish covered in delicious crispy batter paired with some chunky chips covered in salt and vinegar? It makes the mouth water just thinking about it. Cod, haddock, plaice, pollock and flounder are all commonly used when making battered fish and chips. And whether you love yours with a huge dollop of mushy peas or you prefer to pour curry sauce over the whole lot – you can really make this dish your own.

Jellied eels

Jellied Eels are a traditional English dish that originated in London’s East End in the eighteenth century and was sold through numerous eel, pie, and mash houses. The European Eel was common in the Thames at the time and the eel became a staple food for London’s less well-off population. Jellied eels are actually our speciality, and we’ve been producing this London delicacy for over 69 years. One of our favourite ways to eat jellied eels is to break out the warm crusty bread, and chilli vinegar. Delicious!

Fish pie

This savoury pie is one of our favourites and it’s a great autumn/winter dish. Warm mash, melted cheese sauce and buckets of flavour? What more could you want? It’s traditionally made with white fish but the best thing about a fish pie is that you can use any fish you want – salmon, prawns, haddock, you name it. We even have a frozen fish pie mix ready for you to use!

Finnan haddie

Finnan haddie is actually a Scottish delicacy of cold smoked, flavoured haddock. You can either roast or grill it over high heat, but it can also be poached in milk and served for breakfast. It’s thought the name originates from the place it was first invented – in Findon, Scotland back in the 18th century.

Kippers

Kippers are a delicious traditional British breakfast dish consisting of a whole herring that is halved, gutted, seasoned with salt, and cold-smoked over wood chips. Dating back to 1843, kippers are an extremely flavourful and highly nutritious dish! The best way to serve up kippers is on warm toasted and buttered bread. Yum!
