Your guide to refreezing fish

guide to refreezing fish

We’ve all been there. Panicking because we have fish thawed that we never got around to cooking or a bunch of leftovers after a big meal or get-together. It happens. If you hate waste as much as we do, you’ll no doubt be wondering if it’s safe to refreeze fish.

Well, read on to find out…

(we’ll give you a hint, the answer is yes!)

How to safely refreeze fish

Yes, both cooked and uncooked fish that has been thawed in the refrigerator can safely be refrozen. However, there are a few things to keep in mind:

  • Refreeze your fish within a few days of thawing to preserve freshness
  • Never refreeze anything that’s been left out for more than two hours (one hour if the temperature is above 90F/32)

The best way to package fish for freezing

One of the main concerns with freezing your fish is trying to avoid freezer burn. With that in mind, it’s best to wrap your fish in freezer paper or a freezer bag. The thick layer will help to keep air out. If you’re going to use a freezer bag, make sure you squeeze the excess air out of the bag before you seal the top.

Fish that is packaged correctly can last up to 8 months in a freezer with all the freshness sealed in!

Defrosting refrozen fish

When you refreeze fish, it keeps it in its current state. So when you defrost that fish, it goes right back to the way it was when it was refrozen. That means if your fish sat in the fridge for a few days before you decided to refreeze it, you need to try to use it as soon after defrosting it as possible.
