Wakame, (Undaria pinnatifida) is a type of edible seaweed harvested in the North Pacific. The Wakame seaweed salad is made by soaking the dried Wakame in water to make it pliable before mixing it with vinegar dressing, sesame seeds, scallions, soy sauce, sugar and sometimes fish or seafood which gives its somewhat nutty taste and crunchy texture. Produced in South Korea, this Wakame seaweed salad comes in a 500g bag and is ready to eat after defrosting.
Wakame seaweed is low in calories and provides a good amount of fibre making it a good choice for a balanced diet. It is also a great source of vitamins A and K important for the normal functioning of the blood cells and the immune system. Its high content of calcium as well as iron, manganese help maintaining healthy energy levels, strong bones and muscles.
Wakame’s subtly sweet, but distinctive flavour and texture are what makes it a popular dish in Asia and neighbouring North American regions like Hawaii. This seaweed salad comes ready to eat, all you need to do is leave it to defrost, no hard work is needed. A great option for appetisers or a side for Asian themed dinner. Serve with Chilean Sauvignon Blanc or Argentinian Malbec if your main course is better suited to red wine.
